Dear Credit Card Adviser,
I heard that closing a credit card has a negative effect on the FICO score and have read your thread. My question is two parts: If I cancel a credit card that has never been activated, does this affect my FICO score? What about canceling a credit card that was unsolicited and sent to me (and) that was never activated? Thanks for your help.

Dear Credit Card Adviser,
Can you please tell me how long it takes for a credit check to go away and put my score back to what it was? I had a credit check for a credit card, but I am trying to get the highest score possible and I want to know how long it takes for the hit not to show.

Bankruptcy Adviser,
Can I keep one credit card for emergency use without listing in

Dear Credit Card Adviser,
I live in Arkansas. My credit card company recently raised my rate to 22 percent. I thought that Arkansas's usury law prohibits interest rates from exceeding 17 percent. How is this legal?

Dear John,
You're right about the usury limit.

Dear Credit Card Adviser,
With credit cards you can make an application over the telephone. If a card goes into default, how do they prove an agreement since nothing was ever signed?

Dear Richard,
Good question.

Dear Credit Card Adviser,
Like many Americans, I have just recently been laid off from my job. I was employed with the same company for nine years and have a credit score in the 740s. Is there any way for me to have the credit card company help me through this difficult period by reducing or eliminating the interest portion of my payments? They have, in fact, done the opposite during the past two months by doubling my interest rate for absolutely no reason, as I have a perfect payment history.
